Pre-School Wins £8000 prize in Safety Surfacing Competition

The Preschoolers at Kingsdown Pre-School in Deal, Kent are simply loving the new play area which they won in a competition sponsored by School Playground Surfacing Company SSP Specialised Sports Products Ltd.

The small pre-school in the picturesque Kent village has shared facilities in the village hall so that any outdoor surface would also be used by others.  Being popular for wedding receptions, it was very  important for any surface to blend in with the surroundings  and, if possible, enhance the all important wedding photos.

The competition winner’s brief to SSP Ltd was to put forward a design for the play surface which was sympathetic to the community use but still providing a vibrant, colourful, and safe play space for young children.  The existing play surface was sloped tarmac and so a combination of artificial grass and wet pour rubber was used.  To minimise the colour range set within in the playground an artificial grass hopscotch mat that can be rolled out and rolled up was created.

The safety surface was officially opened on the 10th September with SSP Ltd’s Project Manager Andrew Lofting being invited to cut the ribbon.  ‘ The idea behind the competition was to offer the chance to Kent based Pre-Schools, Nursery Schools, & Primary Schools to win a new playground surface and for our company to give something back to our home county.  Although we work nationally it was very rewarding to promote children’s health, sport and play within our local area especially in the Olympic year.  The schools really embraced the concept and we are very pleased for the winners.  They have worked tirelessly to benefit the Pre-School and the local community’.

Lisa Dennison, Chairperson of the Pre-School Committee said, “Our outside area is looking wonderful now. The new grass area means that we don’t have to worry about mats for equipment like the see-saw and slide, and when the children fall off their bikes they don’t seem to graze themselves! It really has transformed our outside play and has given us a springboard to spend much more time on outdoor activities with the children.”
