Charlton Primary School in Dover, Kent was put into special measures in Sept 2013, the school then implemented a comprehensive action plan. Part of the transformation was the increased play facilities for reception class and front of school playground.
The reception class back play area was constrained by a muddy bank which the children had trouble traversing. This made thier play area quite small for much of the year. The solution for this problem was an artificial grass surface which easily contours up banks and provide an ‘all weather’ surface. The bank also then could incorporate a slide.
The top of the bank was tranformed by the addition of a climbing frame on top of the artificial grass. The artificial grass has a recycled foam impact matting providing the critical fall height required under the climbing frame. This extended the reception classes ‘all weather ‘ play area onto the bank. By using the bank as a natural slope a slide and play platform was installed onto this area, giving the children additional play choices.
The main playground was livened up with a larger organic shaped climbing frame with a colourful wet pour rubber surface underneath. The climbing frames includes a small climbing wall , rope traverses and a climbing net. This provides lots of different ways of climbing making it interesting for children to keep climbing on it. The wet pour rubber surfacing provide the critical fall height protection required around the climbing frame. The use of green and red in this colourful safety surfacing is useful as a demarcation line between the wider playground games and the climbing frame and is especially useful for partially sighted children.
An artificial grass surface was installed under an existing trim trail and and a seating area with artificial grass created underneath a large tree. This gives the older children a variety of place to play. Artificial grass is a soft but robust surfacing which is popular in playground for small sports courts, seating quiet areas and play area’s.
The outdoor area was mentioned in the next OFSTED report which graded the school as “Good’ The site is transformed from its poor state at the time of the last inspection. It is safe, inviting, and well equipped to encourage play and learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage has undergone a transformation since the previous inspection. Children enjoy learning in their well-resourced, vibrant classroom and outdoor environment.” Charlton Church of England Primary School Ofsted Report Jan 2015. For the full report CLICK HERE
