SSP was asked to repairs and refurbishment existing equipment and surfacing and to provide some new equipment to replace some of the older playground equipment at Elephant Park in St Brelade , Jersey.
Elephant Park is very busy playground which in turn leads to a lot of wear on the play equipment and surrounding soft surfacing. Resident park user had additionally asked for more seating and shelters so they can use the park more outside the warmer summer months. Small adaptions were made to the park to allow some access for disabled children. SSP worked with a Jersey based company to refurbish some of the equipment.
The iconic elephant slide had been recently refurbished but was surrounded with rubber play-tiles. The play tiles had provided many years usage but had become curled and shrunken in the sun . A new wet pour rubber soft surface in blue was installed around the elephant.

The park was made more accessible with coloured splashes in the wet pour rubber in the playground equipment depicting equipment ending and starting. This can be helpful for partially sighted children and allowing them greater independence in parks.
A cradle swing replaced a single swing unit. Cradle swings can be used by more than one child encouraging co-operation . Additionally for children who are unable to sit in traditional swings ,a cradle swing is much more accessible.
The three metal commercial climbing frames were repainted and new worn out parts replaced. A new soft surfaces was installed beneath the units with colourful splashes. Wet pour rubber is a almost seamless surfaces available in a wide range of colours.
The sand pit had more seating installed around it . The wooden seating is useful for removing shoes in a sand pit and for parent to supervise their children. Additional seating was also provided inside a wooden gazebo.
A 4m wide umbrella sun shade was chosen for the middle of the sand pit. The bright colourful shades are available in a wide range of colours and sizes. They can be easily put down and stored in the winter and have the advantage of only one pole. The sand pit is very popular with younger children and the additional shelter provided allows more time outside.
A wooden clamber stack replaces a small helter skelter slide. Wooden clamber stack are an organic looking structure and are available in four sizes for different ages. Climbing walls and scramble nets can also be added. Elephant parks clamber frame include two scramble nets.

SSP has been working a small number of parks and schools in Jersey.’Once the logistics of ensuring the materials and equipment all arrived on Jersey on time had been overcome, Jersey is a fantastic location to work in.
