Astro turf is a brand name wich is trade marked. It is however also used as a generic name used for arificial grass.Originally AstroTurf was a short pile synthetic turf while the current products incorporate modern features such as antimicrobial protection, rubber and/or sand infil, latex and ruuber backing systems and nylon , polypropylene and polyethylene yarn fibers which may range fro 4-5 mm to 60-80mm used for football.
It was co invented by employees of the American monsata company and patented in 1967 . First sold as 'chemgrass' The first school that used it was the moses brown school in 1964 as an experimental grass. It was renamed by an patent employee in 1966 when it was used in the Houston AstroDome. It was installed after the sun burn and scorched the natural turf thorugh the window in the astrodome.
