FAQ

What is CFH?
CFH stands for Critical Fall Height and is the distance a child falls from a piece of play equipment to the ground.  SSP ProPlay impact matting has been tested for falls from play equipment up to 1.3m high (25mm), 1.6m high (35mm) and 3m high (2 x 35mm).

All SSP Systems have been tested to the requirements of BS7188:1989 Methods of test for impact absorbing playground surfaces and in accordance with European Standard BS EN 1177 (1998).
All SSP installations meet the minimum standards required under BS EN 1176-7:1997 Code of Practice for installation and maintenance.

At http://www.hse.gov.uk/lau/lacs/79-2.htm, please find the following information:

“Impact-absorbing surfacing (IAS) covers a range of materials, for example, manufactured tiles, in-situ formed materials, loose particulates and natural materials such as turf, bark and sand.
It should be noted that the installation of IAS is not a complete solution to the potential for injuries in a playground. Impact-absorbing surfacing is tested for its efficacy in reducing head injury severity and it may not be effective in reducing other injuries. The efficacy of IAS in reducing overall numbers of injuries is not proven. Of equal importance is maintenance of properly designed and installed equipment.”

Can I choose the colour for the coloured EPDM Wet Pour?
Most certainly – please see the colour chart under Play & Sport Safety Surfacing.

With the extras, do I get Number Trails, Hopscotch and Snakes & Ladders, or one of them?
The price for these represents one Number Trail, one Hopscotch etc.

Can I buy the Wet Pour materials from you?
No, SSP can install this product only.

I’ve heard that children’s clothing and shoes are stained by Wet Pour Rubber surfaces.  Is this correct?
It is possible for clothes and shoes to be stained by SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) which is made from tyre manufacture.  However EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Di Monomer) Wet Pour Rubber is manufactured from virgin rubber and will not cause stains.

How can I get samples of SSP Artificial Grass and ProPlay?
For samples call (0870 750 1432), email enquiries@ssp-uk.co.uk or fill out a form under “Request Samples” on the website.

Is there a minimum area size for having an Artificial Grass lawn or play area installed?
No, there is no minimum area, and we install anywhere in the United Kingdom.  However, if you live outside the London and Home Counties it may not be viable for us to install a very small area.  In this case there are two options – we can supply the materials only, with instructions on laying the surface – or we can telephone an associated company in your area and ask them to get in touch with you.

How do you fix the edge of the grass?
This is normally done with embedded tanalised timber edgings and tacks.  The grass is pulled over the edging and tacked to the timber.  Surrounding grass or soil is then backfilled to the timber edgings.

Can I install Artificial Grass on to a muddy soil?
Yes, it is possible to install the grass on to a muddy soil area.  Please bear in mind that the grass will mimic the surface underneath, so you need to be sure that the soil is as level as possible, and compact.

Will my children suffer from friction burn on your Artificial Grasses?
No, our grasses are child friendly and the Artificial Grass is manufactured in such a way that our soft, flexible grass carpets provide a surface which is not abrasive.  Artificial grass is softer than hard mud, and much softer than concrete or paving – and with the addition of SSP ProPlay impact matting the resultant playground is tested to British Standard EN 1177(1998) criteria.

How do I measure the area I want to change to Artificial Grass?
Please measure the area in metres.  Once you have the square metre figure, divide that by 4 to find out how many metres of grass carpet you require.  Round up to the nearest metre.

Think of the Artificial Grass like an indoor carpet or a piece of fabric.  The Artificial Grass carpet is 4m wide (the same has house carpet), and can only be sold in full width pieces.  Some grasses are 2m wide, but mixing the two widths is not recommended as the colours in each carpet may differ.

Be aware that there is a “nap” in the carpet – turning one piece at 90 degrees to another will result in the two pieces of carpet looking different.

How do I know how much ProPlay to order?
The ProPlay is manufactured in slabs, each slab being 0.9m wide and 2.25m long.  This represents just over 2 square metres for measuring purposes.  Pieces can be laid although it is not recommended that very small pieces are used.

You claim that your products are environmentally friendly.  Please explain why.
SSP ProPlay is manufactured from recycled closed cell cross-linked polyethylene foam.  This foam is used in new car manufacture (infill behind dashboards etc) and it is combined with similar surplus foam products without using glues or adhesives.

Using the Artificial Grass means that your water consumption is reduced as the grass does not need watering, no fertiliser is needed and no carbon emissions from garden machinery are sent into the atmosphere.

SSP Artificial Grass is manufactured with holes in the back of the carpet.  Water can drain away, so flooding is avoided – vastly preferable to concrete, tarmac or paved areas!

What about my pets?  Is Artificial Grass suitable for areas where dogs and cats run?
Artificial grass is ideal for gardens with pets.  Dogs cannot dig it up and dog or cat urine can be hosed away.  Faeces can be collected and disposed of in just the same way as on natural turf.

My parents are elderly and they are having trouble maintaining their large garden, which as well as a lawn, has several large and old trees which they do not want to harm.  How can Artificial Grass help them?
Artificial Grass is wonderful for older people.  A natural turf garden can be transformed into a clean and tidy green space which requires no mowing and very little maintenance.  Leaves and debris can be brushed off the surface, and the Artificial Grass replaces dark muddy areas under trees where nothing will grow.  SSP Artificial Grass has been local authority approved and installed in areas where there are Tree Preservation Orders in force.  It will not damage the tree roots in any way.

I own a holiday home and I have to pay a gardener to maintain my garden while I am not there.  How can Artificial Grass help me?
You will very quickly recoup the cost of having an Artificial Grass Lawn installed at your holiday home.  Additionally the surface will always look good, and the drainage holes in the grass carpet will ensure that you do not suffer flooding (except in extreme circumstances).  SSP Artificial Grass is robust and UV resistant – it is designed for children to play on it – so will be tough enough to withstand the games of family, friends or paying guests using your property.
